Bevagna, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy set in the heart of Umbria

Set right in the heart of Italy on a fertile plain of wheat fields, vineyards, and olive groves, Bevagna is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. During your stay at Gallano Resort, you should definitely come explore this unique town. One day will be enough time to fall in love with Bevagna. You will get the feeling that time has never passed as you peacefully meander along its piazzas, alleys, churches, palaces, and bell towers. Bevagna runs along the “Sagrantino Wine Road”, which makes it a perfect place to taste the excellent Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG.

BEVAGNA IS EASY TO GET AROUND ON FOOT AND BY BIKE

Bevagna is a little gem nestled in the center of Umbria, in the province of Perugia. It is a small valley town, an ideal setting for a wander. Fortified between the 13th and 14th centuries as a defense against foreign incursions, Bevagna is surrounded by perfectly preserved city walls and towers.

In the heart of Bevagna is Piazza Silvestri, one of the most beautiful and scenic medieval squares in the region, featuring a 19th-century fountain and a Roman column with a Corinthian capital.

As you walk around the town center, you will be able to spot the remains of the Roman theater, temple, and thermal baths. A possible entryway into Bevagna is through the bridge over the Clitunno river, which offers a picturesque view of the “Accolta”, the old outdoor wash house. After a small waterfall, the Clitunno flows into the Teverone river and continues its course through the Umbrian Valley.

Bevagna is also easy to explore by bike, as it lies along the Spoleto-Assisi bike path. To say that Bevagna is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and one of the most emblematic medieval towns in Umbria is by no means an overstatement.

BEVAGNA TAKES YOU BACK TO THE MIDDLE AGES

Bevagna brings you right back to the Middle Ages as you are immersed in a magical atmosphere. If you are lucky enough to visit Bevagna in the last ten days of June, you will come across one of the most beautiful events of the region, the “Mercato delle Gaite”, an historical reenactment that recreates the town’s daily life between 1250 and 1350.

During this medieval festival, the ancient craft shops reopen their doors, and the streets get crowded with locals dressed in period costumes as they enjoy eating, working, and playing just like their ancestors did.

THE DOWNTOWN MEDIEVAL SHOPS ARE OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND TO OFFER YOU A REAL JOURNEY BACK IN TIME AS YOU UNCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE “MEDIEVAL ARS”
